Supporting Visually Impaired Employees in Every Working Environment – Not Just Offices

If you’re an employer wondering how best to support a staff member with sight loss, you’re in the right place.

At Visualise Training and Consultancy, we provide UK and Ireland-wide visual impairment workplace assessments for employees with any level of sight loss – whether they work at a desk, in a warehouse, in retail, healthcare, education, on the move, or from home.

We’re often asked:
“Do you only assess office-based employees?”
Absolutely not. We support employees in all types of roles — desk-based and non-desk-based, including those working in manual, customer-facing, hybrid or remote environments.

What Is a Visual Impairment Workplace Assessment?

A visual impairment workplace assessment identifies what support, adjustments, or assistive technology an employee may need to do their job effectively, safely, and comfortably.
Our assessments are tailored to:

  • The individual’s specific eye condition
  • Their day-to-day tasks
  • Their physical work environment

We then provide clear, practical recommendations that help remove barriers and improve performance and wellbeing.

Why It's Important (and Legally Required)

Under the Equality Act 2010, employers have a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments for employees with a disability, including those with visual impairments.

Failing to do so can result in poor performance, increased absence, legal claims, and employee disengagement.

Our workplace assessments give you:

  • Expert guidance to meet your legal obligations
  • A more inclusive, supportive work culture
  • Increased employee confidence and retention

Frequently Asked Questions About Visual Impairment Workplace Assessments

A visual impairment workplace assessment typically lasts around two hours. This allows sufficient time to understand the employee’s role, tasks, working environment and barriers.

Once we receive the workplace assessment referral form, we contact the employee directly to arrange a suitable time. After the assessment has taken place, the workplace assessment report is returned to the referring company within 10 working days.

The visual impairment workplace assessment report is sent directly to the referring organisation. It provides clear, practical recommendations that can be implemented internally.

Each workplace assessment report includes tailored equipment recommendations, reasonable adjustments, environmental considerations and practical guidance for managers. All recommendations are proportionate and role‑specific.

Many visual impairment workplace assessments can be carried out virtually. In most cases, a virtual assessment allows us to review the employee’s tasks, working environment and challenges effectively using video and screen sharing. As specialists in visual impairment workplace assessments, we are experienced in identifying barriers and recommending adjustments in both virtual and face‑to‑face settings. Face‑to‑face assessments are also available where a physical review of the workspace is beneficial, but in many situations a virtual workplace assessment works just as well.

No. Our workplace assessments are suitable for a wide range of roles including education, healthcare, retail, operational and hybrid working environments.
