This short film shows what can happen when an employer knows about an employee’s hearing loss but never arranges an assessment or puts adjustments in place, and performance is then treated as the problem. It is a reminder to ask what support has been provided before judging how someone is doing.
Transcript
The manager has called him in about his targets. His call times are slow. His scores are down. She says the next step is a formal process. His employer has known about his hearing loss for months. No assessment was ever arranged. No adjustments were ever put in place.
He tries to explain. She talks over him. The numbers are the numbers. He goes quiet. He is angry with himself. He thinks it is his fault. But the targets were never the problem. The support was never put in place.
If someone is missing their targets, ask what has been done to help them here before you judge how they are doing. A workplace assessment looks at the person, the job and the workplace.
