New job. I wanted to prove myself. So when the figures on the screen were too small to read, I guessed. And I got one wrong. My manager asked to see me in a small room. My heart was pounding.

I was certain this was the end. I had been hiding my sight loss since my first day, and now I was about to be found out. I thought I would be fired. I thought I would lose my job. I thought nobody would understand. So I said it. I have sight loss, and I should have told you.

She was quiet for a moment. Then she said, thank you for telling me, what would help? That was it. No judgment. We had a workplace assessment, a bigger screen, magnification software, documents I can enlarge. I have not had to guess a number since.

I used to be ashamed. Now I am loud and proud about my sight loss. I am here because I am good at this. If this is you, tell someone.

In the film, a bigger screen, magnification software and enlargeable documents meant the figures could be read with confidence. A workplace assessment looks at how someone actually sees in their own workspace and recommends adjustments that fit.
