You Don’t Look Blind: Sight Loss Is a Spectrum (Short Film)

This short film follows one blind person who is told “you don’t look blind” and answers with wit and confidence. It shows that sight loss is a spectrum and that there is no single look.

Let me guess. You expected someone quieter, less colour. Perhaps a sad violin playing in the background. I am loud. I am well dressed. I have strong opinions about brunch. And yes, I am blind.

A man once told me, “You don’t look blind.” So I asked him, “What does blind look like?” He had nothing. Blind people are funny, clever, stylish, confident, and sometimes a bit of a show-off, just like everyone else.

Sight loss is a spectrum. Some people see nothing at all. Some see light, shapes and colour. Some see well by day and hardly at all at night. Some use a cane. Some use a guide dog. Some use nothing.

We come in every shape, size, age and style. There is no look. So drop the stereotype and ask what works for the person in front of you.

Because sight loss varies so much, the right support depends on the person, not the label.
